Entomology: Biodiversity and Conservation

Project Proposals for 2006 - Group H

Across the whole spectrum of the insect orders, these small creatures are valuable indicators of a healthy, natural and sustainable environment. To use insects in such a scientific study, it is necessary to get to know them. This can mainly be done by collecting them through different collecting methods in nature.
The aim of this project is to teach students the diversity of Entomology, the careful handling of the insects, alive or dead. Preparing the specimens correctly to be used in scientific studies, broad identification and then place them into a collection.
It is intended to go out into the open country of the Ezemvelo Nature Reserve, using different collecting methods to do an impact study of mainly adult insects that move around after good rains, and a healthy surrounding.

To achieve this the students will

*visit the Transvaal Museum and it's scientific, international insect collections
        *visit bee hives
*do all the work, under supervision, themselves
