Fungi play an important role in nature, living on dead organic material
and forming symbiotic relationships with some trees and other plant
species. They have been used as a biotechnology tool for thousands
of years in baking and brewing. Many fungi are edible and available
off the shelves of supermarkets as mushrooms; however there are many
poisonous species growing in the wild and it is important to be able to correctly
identify different mushrooms. The aim of this project is to learn
and use DNA identification techniques to positively tell apart various
mushrooms and to discover the exciting uses of fungi in conventional
and modern biotechnology.
