Activity 14

Where stuff comes from!

Mentors
Miranda & Helga

Have you ever thought about where all the stuff you use and consume everyday comes from?

  1. The food you consume everyday - where was it grown, packed, processed and how did it end up on your table?
  2. The clothes you wear - what are the made of, where did the material come from and who made them?
  3. The stuff you use - where was your phone assembled?.
  4. Your habits; this is refers to your consumer habits, your recycling habits, etc.
  Activities
  1. Make a list of all the items of clothing you are wearing and write down in which country each item was made. Save your list in a Word document in your folder, file name yoursurname_stuff.docx

  2. On the list write down the make of cell phone you use and where is was manufactured.

  3. Choose two items on your list that did not originate in South Africa and estimate how far ( in km) they had to travel to get to Gauteng. Also show the mode(s) of transport (ship, plane, truck, ...) used to get the item to you.

  4. Read chapter 15, Stuff, of David MacKay's Sustainable Energy without the Hot Air. Capture your own thoughts about this chapter in your 'stuff'- document.

  5.
  6. Reflect on your findings in your blog.
