Activity 12

Capture data from your food label survey

 

Assignment:

  1. "Yes", "no" and "maybe" answers are easy to capture. Difficult answers to capture are value judgements or long verbal responses. Sit together as a group and look at the responses you recorded on your questionnaires. Try to classify or group them and write down classifications or codes for your answers.
  2. Each group member has to create an Excel workbook with at least two worksheets.
    Name this document yourSurnameFoodgroup.xlsx and place it in your folder on the network drive. Your folder should be named YourSurname.
  3. Rename one worksheet: "questions". (Don't know how? Ask)
  4. Rename the second worksheet: "answersN" or "reponsesN" were N is a number (1 to 5) as allocated by your group members.
  5. Write down all the questions on the question worksheet. After each question, note the values or classifications of the different responses. This is also called a response key.
    (Note: Do not type in ALL CAPS!)
  6. Once each group member has captured all the data, combine the 4(5) workbooks into one workbook with 5 (6) worksheets. Name this file FoodLabelGroup_survey.xlsx, example: Tomato_survey, and place the file in your FoodGroup folder.
  7. Greate a new worksheet, named "Totals"; combine the answers from all worksheets in this sheet. Each group member should then copy this sheet into his/her excel workbook.
  8. Analise the responses and draw at suitable graphs for your questions - each member to do at least 2 graphs.
  9. Prepare a short, 5 minute, PowerPoint presentation to summarise the whole "Food label" assignment. Use some of the graphs to share your findings with the rest of the group; try to choose the more interesting or surprising results.
    End your presentation with a short reflection on what you learnt about food labels or some of the ingredients that are used in processed foods.
    Finally, tell us how you think the information on food labels could be made more understandable to the general public.

    Your presentation should have only 6 - 10 slides and show the most interesting facts and findings of your product.

Remember to save your files as specified in 'yourSurname' folder or FoodGroup folder and "save often".

 

Tips

Make sure your cells have the right format (right-click, select "Format Cells ..." and choose General or Number of Text, or... ... ...)

Examples of formulas you should know:

  • To add the numbers in cells A1 to A10 you can either type
    • =A1+A2+A3+A4+A5+A6+A7+A8+A9+A10
      or
    • =SUM(A1:A10)
  • =COUNTBLANK(L3:L15)
    count how many cells in the column L from cell L3 to L15 are blank
  • =AVERAGE(G3:G13)
    calculates the average value of the numbers in cells G3 to G13; blank cells are not taken into account. A zero does not count as a blank cell.
  • =COUNTIF(C1:C20,"1")
    counts the number of cells that have the value 1
  • =COUNTIF(K2:K21,"BioChem")
    counts the number of cells that have the word BioChem.
