  "Write with Style" - Assignment
5 October 2013

This is a practical assignment similar to assignments you may get once you are a student at UP. Before you start, read through all the instructions and if there is something you do not understand, ask for help.

Estimated time: 2-4 hours
Due: Saturday 27 September 2013, 20:00

  Introduction
Computer literacy is a skill; a skill that is only perfected through practice. Although it helps to attend courses to master the intricacies of a specific software package, the best teacher still is "the time YOU spend in front of the computer doing it", whatever "it" may be.
All programmes come with a help file. Learn how to use it.

Assignment
Open a new Word document and start by making sure the page size is set to A4; set the margins as follows: top = 2.5 cm, left = 3 cm, right = 2.5 cm, bottom = 2 cm.
Set Language to "English (South Africa)", 'Review' -> 'Language' -> Proofing Language.
Import the text file "CharlesDarwin_exerpt.txt" into the document and format the document using styles; do not use any of the default styles. Delete the remarks in the text.
Save the document in your folder on the network drive as Yoursurname_Darwin.docx

The following elements should be in the final document:

  • Two different headings;
  • The body of your document with a font size between 10 and 12 pt, single line spacing, and 6 pt spacing after a paragraph;
  • Titles of books should be in italics;
  • at least one bulleted list - the lines of your bulleted list should be single spaced;
  • a table - choose suitable content in the text for that;
  • at least two pictures chosen from the Darwin folder; the 'wrapping of one picture should be 'in line with text' and the wrapping of the other picture should be 'square' with alignment either, left or right;
  • a footer containing your name on the left and the page number on the right.

Bonus points will be given for:

  • Create a "Table of Contents" at the end of your document.
  • Insert the photo of Emma and Charles Darwin but crop it so that you have two separate photos - place one photo an the left and one photo on the right of you main heading.

Table of Contents
Word will generate a "Table of Contents" for you with the correct page numbers if you have used styles in your document. To generate the Table of Contents go to "References" -> "Table of Contents" and select the one of the options.

Images
Use any of the following images in your document:

Tips
Here are a few tips to make your life at the computer easier.
If you get stuck, consult the "Help" file of the program you are working in. It is normally located at the far right on the top menu bar.
Use the right mouse button for quick access to some menus.
Memorise the following keyboard shortcuts:
Ctrl + A = selects all.
Ctrl + C = copy selected text / image.
Ctrl + V = Paste the copied text / image.
Ctr + X = Delete
Use the spell checker.

Typing skills
Practice your typing skills. If you cannot type with all five fingers, try to do daily exercises in the compolsory typing tutorial.
If you write in Afrikaans set your Language to "Afrikaans" and remember that the apostrophe in front of the "n" in the Afrikaans 'n looks like this: ' and not like this '. Use "ALT 0146" to generate it.
Remember - "Practice makes perfect."
