Report Guidelines

  • General
    • Page formatting
Make sure your page size is set to A4. Set all margins to 2.5 cm and line spacing to 1. Make use of page numbering. Your final document should not exceed ten A4 pages.
    • Font
Don’t use any weird, wonderful, fancy or strange fonts. Your document will only be readable on another computer if the font that you used is installed on that computer. Times New Roman and Arial are safe fonts to use. For printed documents, use a font such as Times New Roman (a serif font).
Use a font size of 10-12 points for body text. Words in capital letters are difficult (slow) to read. Use them sparingly.
    • Cover Page
This report does not need a cover page.
    • Plagiarism
Avoid plagiarism. If you don’t understand this statement, consult the plagiarism guidelines of the University of Pretoria or ask somebody what it means.
    • Referencing
List all your sources at the end of your report.

  • Outline and structure
Your report should have the following sections:
    • A Title
    • Author(s)
    • Introduction
      Say something about this project.
    • Subject
Briefly describe the project and then say what your contribution to the project was.
    • Research
Explain the science behind your topic and how you researched it on the Internet.
    • Reflection - this is very important
List all members of your group.
Reflect on your experiences during this project and say what you learned during this project. Say what you enjoyed about it, what you did not like, what you would do differently if you had to do it again, etc.
    • Bibliography & References
List all your sources. Use the Harvard system (author- date system) of referencing and sort your references alphabetically by author surname. If you are not sure about the correct referencing format, consult the examples given in Dr. van der Waals document “How to write a report”.
Make a separate list of all the images you used in your report and give their origin.
