Draughts

Game Board

The game is played by two players on a standard chess board with 64 squares. A black (or dark) square should be on each player’s left. There are 12 game pieces for each player. These game pieces normally are light and dark round, flat disks.

Objective

The objective of the game is to take all of the opponent's pieces or to force the opponent into a position where he/she cannot move.

Playing the game

Only the darks squares on the board are used. Each player's pieces are placed on the 12 dark squares nearest to the player. The player with the dark pieces always starts. The pieces may only move diagonally and forward. The player whose turn it is, moves one piece diagonally forward to an adjacent vacant square. If an opponent's piece occupies one of the adjacent squares, and there is a vacant square immediately behind it, that piece of the opponent can and must be captured. Capturing is done by hopping over the opponent's piece to the vacant square and then removing it from the board. A player may not move a piece on to a square occupied by an opponent's piece which does not have a vacant square immediately behind it.
Any piece that reaches the far edge of the board is crowned by placing another piece of the same colour on top of it. It is then referred to as "King". The King may move or capture backwards and forwards, as the limits of the board permit. (The King, like any other piece, must capture when the occasion arises.)

End of the Game

A game is won when a player captures all his opponent's pieces, or renders them unable to move.
A draw results when neither of the players can force a win.
