Background
The University of Pretoria is located in one of the most vibrant and
dynamic areas in Pretoria. Hatfield has become a major student and
tourist attraction in Pretoria mainly due to the presence of this
prestigious academic institution, and also because of its proximity
to the inner city of Pretoria. It has been exposed to a number of
changes during the last few decades as a result of amongst others,
a rapid population increase, growing and changing housing demand,
increased mobility and commercial and transportation pressure.
Project outline
The first part of the project will involve a scientific assessment
of the Hatfield area, within the context of the Greater Pretoria.
You will scientifically analyse the area in terms of its linkages
to other important nodes, its function within the metropolitan area,
the prevailing land uses, physical infrastructure, densities and
trends directing development within Hatfield. The second part of
the project entails a more site-specific design, considering the
results of your analysis to eventually draft a proposal regarding
future development in the area.
Aim
The aim of the project is to introduce you to the concept of, and scientific
approach to, settlement analysis and design, to sensitise you to
the forces working within cities and neighbourhoods and to introduce
you to the approach and nature of intervention to improve living
and working conditions for all urban dwellers.
Approach
The field of town and regional planning is multi-disciplinary in nature
and would appeal to people who have a broad understanding of and
interest in a number of different scientific fields. It is specifically
focused on problem solving in a context of multiple possibilities
and influences. The importance of sustainable and responsible development
is emphasised and a hands-on approach is followed that includes site
visits and liaison with professionals in the field.
