Chemistry:
Environmental Chemistry

Project Proposals for 2004 - Russells Group

Introduction
Aquatic chemistry is the branch of environmental chemistry that deals with chemical phenomena in water.
The study of water is known as hydrology. As hydrologist, in this project, you will study the water in dams and wetlands (vleiland).

Basic Chemical Principles that will be used

  • Atomic Theory
    • Water: molecular geometry and models, covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds.
    • Salts: Ions, Ionic Bonds and Solubility
  • Equilibrium Processes
    • Acids and Bases
    • pH

Field Work

Laboratory

pH measurements and analytical analysis of the dissolved salts from environmental samples, collected from dams and wetlands, will be done in the laboratory.
