The use of indigenous plant extracts to control bacterial and plant pathogens

Bacterial and fungal plant pathogens are a major cause of extensive losses for many economically important plant species. These pathogens have been successfully eliminated by using various chemical treatments. Since certain chemicals pose potential harmful effects on the environment and the community, the investigation into the anti-microbial properties of various plant extracts has attracted wide interest.

During this project the students will:

  1. Select indigenous plant species to be used in the study.
  2. Prepare crude extracts of the leaves from the plants chosen.
  3. Test the plant extracts against certain fungal and bacterial plant pathogens.
  4. Test the efficacy of the plant extracts on plants under natural conditions.
The efficacy of these extracts will be compared to industrial products.
