"Medicinal activity of Metha longifolia and formulation of cough syrup and mouth rinse"

Traditional use of herbs such as mint has been practiced for many years for curing ailments. Mentha longifolia is a herb that has a strong mint smell and taste and has found its way into many homes where it’s used in the kitchens and also as a medicine.

The project will entails some of the processes humans employ in the laboratory to acquire and use active compounds found in plants.

Aim and objectives of this project:

  • To provide learners with the basic knowledge of medicinal use of the herb.
  • To expose learners to the botanical garden and the correct procedure of collecting plants.
  • To introduce learners to laboratory instruments and their uses.
  • To expose learners to different screening tests used to analyse active compounds present in the herb.

At the end of the project learners will be able to formulate their own cough syrup and mouth rinse using the herb, appreciate the link between ethnobotany, indigenous knowledge and pharmaceuticals.
