"The Vegetable garden and Plant pathology"

Aims of project

  • Disease survey or progression on a crop, form seedling to harvest (the idea is to visit the garden each time and record the diseases present and explain how, what, why of the different disease occurring at different times)
  • Mini-plots, compare untreated soil, compost amended soil and solarized soil with regard to plant growth and disease occurrence.
  • Learn about separate aspects of plant pathology, such as isolation, inoculation, symptom description, disease identification, pathogen identification etc. how and what plant pathologists do.

  1. Seed health ( Prof Terry's group)
  2. Seedling health (Prof Nico Labuschagne)
  3. Plant health (Prof Jacquie's group)
  4. Lab Day - prepare samples for Open Day.
  5. Postharvest pathology (Prof Lise's group)
  6. Winter week
    1. Basic lab work - e.g. microscopy, pathogen ID
    2. Field trip to farmer / Hygrotech / SAKATA
    3. Evaluate mini-plots
    4. Baiting of Phytophthora from soil?
    5. Postharvest trial evaluate
    6. Write up report (at least 2 days)
