Research projects, Group P

"The Radio Universe"

In this project, students will learn various aspects about radio astronomy, astrophysics and about the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), which will be built in South Africa. The aim of this project will be to build a simple radio telescope using a common DSTV satellite dish.  Some additional electronic components will also have to be assembled in order to amplify and detect radio signals, in order to perform various experiments. This simple radio telescope will allow observations of radio emissions from the sun, the galactic plane and possibly also solar flares. Various interesting topics in physics will be discussed as part of the project in order to understand the basic ideas behind radio astronomy.
