Project Proposals for 2011 - GroupMurray & Roberts

"GM Maize: Do you know what you are eating?"

Genetically modified (GM) plants are a fact of modern life. Not only can plants be engineered to be resistant to pests and diseases, but additional nutritional benefits can be incorporated to supplement imbalances. Examples include the engineering of a “golden” potato, containing a high concentration of vitamin A for increased nutritional benefits in third world countries, as well as the Bt maize variety containing an insect-specific toxin leading to increased yield and lower environmental contamination.
We will use DNA isolation and analysis techniques to study the GM maize content of selected products with that of control plants to be grown under growth room conditions. Since the regulation of GM plants is a very topical international issue we will have a look at the SA regulations, and find out from experts about the economic impact at ground level.
Get your lab coat ready and take your seat for a ride on the GMO bandwagon.
