Project Proposals for 2010 - Group L

"Geology as a driving force in creation and shaping the earth"

The Earth’s crust is composed predominantly ofrocks, soil and water with the former forming from the cooling and solidification magma. Based on geo-scientific evidence we know that millions of years ago we had one Supercontinent called Pangea and throughout the earth history breaking up and amalgamation of continents is driven by geological processes mainly Plate tectonics. These processes are the main architect of our beautiful earth e.g. mountain, hot springs caves, diamonds, gold etc. However some of these processes are also hazardous to our well being. In this project we will attempt to build a model that will help us explain how vital geology is to our survival and downfall to ordinary people or aspiring youth. Moreover, we will look at how we can combine it with other disciplines be either for commercial or scientific reasons.

Along the way the student will be introduced to the following:

  • An introduction to General geology
  • Rock classification
  • Experiment design
  • Data recording
  • Graphical analysis
  • Interpretation

Participants

  • Mr. Philani Mavimbela
  • Mr. Victor. L Tibane
